Farmland Project Members at Raven Rock Farm

History

The Pender Island Community Farmland Acquisition Project was registered as a Society in November of 2009 by a group of Penderites who saw opportunity to improve local food self-sufficiency, preserve farmland and local farming knowledge, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and involve the community in producing local, healthy food.

Our mission statement:

To acquire and steward Pender Island community farmland:

  • to be held in perpetuity for sustainable food production;
  • to encourage community involvement in local, sustainable food production and consumption;
  • to provide community members with access to the land while increasing knowledge and practices of sustainable farming;
  • to create more farmers and increase food security on the Pender Islands.

We have a vision of a farmland trust that supports sustainable agriculture, producing local healthy food and increasing food self-sufficiency on Pender Island, while combining ecological conservation, education and community. Community-owned and protected land will provide access to farmland for a new generation of young farmers, help preserve local farming knowledge, and create possibilities for educational, social and cultural programs for our community.
